At first I wasn’t sure how to approach this project. I have little film skills and even less editing skills. I had a couple of ideas meandering around but what I didn’t account for was how short the time we had really was. The end of the year snuck up on me so fast it felt like it had just come up, tapped me on the shoulder, and punched me directly in the face. The idea and video that I have changed because of unexpected circumstances. Originally I had planned to film my journey to school starting from my front door. My journey entails a bus, a sky train, another bus, and a short walk. What I didn’t anticipate was that my mom and my sister would be coming back on the day I had set out for filming. She would need the car to drive back and that car was in my possession. I decided to film the car ride to the airport. Although not as I had originally planned, the car ride was greatly successful. Driving is something that everyone does and sometimes it feels as if I am just floating through traffic not necessarily thinking about anything. The video itself is around 14 minutes. I decided the best way to show my journey was to speed up the film. I watched the tape on fast forward and found it almost comical to see the cars bobbing back on for, speeding up, merging, cutting people off, and all those lovely things. It’s life, just fast forward.

This project happens be my favorite out of all the ones for DIVA. In a way it was similar to something that I would be comfortable with (ie not film or sound ha) instead it was a representation of myself. Although there are room for improvements and changes I felt that it did (almost) get the message across. I tried to make the story easy and simple and not entirely elaborate. I did not want to create something that would get so wrapped up in the story that the image itself no longer spoke for itself. This picture can be easily summed up in a couple of sentences and I like this.
This project represents me. I took a bunch of different photos with me in the frame to create three characters wearing three different types or costumes. In some ways this is where my project is not as strong. From left to right I appear in a Harry potter inspire outfit (I’m wearing the Gryffindor scarf and sweater), then in a shirt with a pikachu (this is hard to see and thus could be improved), and then at the far right I am in a Sailor Mars outfit from the animated 90′s show Sailor Moon. Even if some of the costumes are hard to recognize I feel that with a little explanation and back story the picture does make sense and is almost a success.

and here she blows:

The Paradise Institute is an exhibit featured at Emily Carr University’s Concourse Gallery. It was originally made to represent Canada in 2001 at the 49th Venice Biennale where the exhibit met with rave reviews . It was awarded the “La Biennale di Venezia Special Award” for its “..involving the audience in a new cinematic experience where fiction and reality, technology and the body converge into multiple and shifting journeys through space and time.”. Created by Janet Cardiff and George Bures in 2001, the Paradise Institute stands at almost three by eleven and a height of almost three meters. The Plywood exterior creates an unusual shape for the content on the interior and there are two doors on either side the open into what appears to be a small but “modest” size theatre. The two seats “overlook” the floor-seats of an old style Hollywood-like cinema. The entire layout of the inside creates one of the most unique and involving art pieces featured from Canadian artists.

Cardiff and Bures have created an alternative reality. From the outside it looks like a misshaped plywood box. The focal point takes place on the inside, however, when you are lead through a door and into two seats; from there you slip on a pair of head phones. At the front is a screen. It is projecting a video about a young man trapped in a hospital. Slowly you become aware of sounds and for thirteen minutes you are taken into false reality. In the tiny room you being to doubt your senses. The screen on screen-like setup that Cardiff and Bures have constructed creates a sense of doubt within people whom believe that the room is empty. But is it really? There are rustling of clothes, moving shoes, and a mix of audible conversation. Although with the lights on it seems rather cozy the effects of the screens and lights begin to faze your imagination. It seems like this is just an actual theatre. The mixing is excellent in blinding the line between reality and illusion. Cardiff and Bures have been successful in creating a surreal environment.

This exhibit plays greatly on peoples own sense of reality, sights, and sounds. The make up of the theatre is constructed in such a way as to play on those senses and peoples doubts. Are you really alone in the theatre? There is a row of balconies to both sides and and couple of rows of seats. The layouts makes it seem as if the theatre is much larger than it is. The outside hardly looks big enough for all of this? I really enjoyed the use of space and detail. I couldn’t have imagined being about to create something like this. Although some sounds were a bit to audible I really felt that I was losing my mind a bit. How the screens were setup made it difficult to see the inside for what it really was. Instead I found myself getting lost in the sounds of this theatre. Both Cardiff and Bures have created an involving exhibition/

My friends just admitted that they had to sleep in Cafe Crepe because they missed the bus home. It is just insane all up in here.
So as we all are aware of the Olympics are here! It has been a close to gnarly. Just the immense sea of people on any given night walking up and down the streets of Vancouver just blows my mind. In the last couple of weeks I have hardly slept. Damn it almost feels kind of good. There are no regrets here about anything. My digital camera has unfortunately been sitting most of this one out. Kind of scared to lose it but that will pass and then I shall be fearless. For now I have been utilizing my lovely film camera. You can’t upload those types of though instantly. The 90′s should have learned from the millennium..don’t they know anything.

I am sure that most people have seen all the craziness that is around. What I love most of all is how they transformed some of the streets, added art to buildings, and just plain decorated. The mural at the art gallery is awesome at night. They shine the light to illuminate it and it creates this awesome shadow. The trees with the hanging ornaments I absolutely love. Did the have kids do them? They looked like drawings that may been done by children. I will look into this. Either way they make my feel very celebratory.

I found a website around and I didn’t bother to book mark it. Instead I saved some lovely but rare photos of people. In a way I kind of do find them inspirational. Some of these people are so young and in the beginning of their careers. Looking at them makes me kind of smile. It makes me feel like I know more than they do….

Kate Moss and Johnny Depp

Star Wars Crew!

Jimmy Page

Kurt Cobain

Harrison Ford is just so suave. I love that man.

The Hill on Granville Island

Ok so maybe I am just inept at Audio..things..because I have a feeling this wont really work. I can’t seem to save my project as an MP3 file rather than a Aup file.

Thank the forces of nature for right clicking.

I though this image was funny and cute and very clever.

yeah that whole “post a link in the box we’ll do it for you” thing doesn’t work for me.

I’ve got coffee and I’m ready to go…..do things….

So today is Monday. Again. I am sitting here on my lovely chair and next to my left is yet another chair of the very same nature. On that chair is my cat, perching herself. No one else is home and usually when I am the only sole soul in the house my cats seem to slowly circle me.

Photobucket

This is my Kitty Radius. After much thought and science this is the diagram I have come up with. My photoshop has exploded it seems and will no longer with be with me. I do have paint though. I believe that when there is only one person in the house the cats inside will be within that circle radius. It gets smaller the less amount of people and bigger when there are more people in my house (aka a dinner party). Although my cats will come and visit me when they feel they would like to be pet ( this means inserting themselves between whatever it is that I am paying attention to and myself). see diagram

I’m done with Paint now. What I do have to do is a fair bit of work. I have taken my panorama! Yay! I snagged the only day of perfect blue skies it seems. On friday I went down to my big park and frolicked for a while in various costumes. Some gym kids did not see a giant life saver from across the field though. I would have noticed that. For my panorama I took a bunch of photos (nearly 6!) of me in various costumes in each frame. I had a harry potter get up (I have the gryffindor scarf and sweater), a yellow pikachu shirt ( is it sad that I own more than one…and a Harry potter outfit..and a sailor mars outfit?), a lifesavers costume, and a Sailor Mars outfit (from sailor moon..just in case you are not familiar. You’d be surprised). Ill have to tweak it later since, as I mentioned before, my photoshop went south. Damn you. I guess you get what you pay for and in my case I didn’t pay much…just download time and heartache.

I have a “to do list” so to speak. Today (as it is a still early twirly 9:53 am) I have a large chunk of time to start doing stuff. I’m glad the panorama is all good and taken but now I have to focus on other things like…the mp3 assignments and photography (hardly homework if its fun). The mp3 assignment I am still unsure of but thats ok. Ill write down some back up plans.

I think that ends my brain activity. I’d love love love to ramble more but sadly there doesn’t seem to be much coming out right now. Except for this random thought that I should, at the end of each entry, end with a series of pictures whose name corresponds to a good bye..or any sentence for that matter. If you dont know what the hell I mean dont panic just grab a towel and wait until I come back with an example.
